BA’s Desk: Brothers, In today’s global society, people continue to look for the best buy but not necessarily the best quality. In the Elevator Industry our signatory companies are willing to sell their services at a discounted rate and reduce manpower to promote higher profits. The ultimate result is that the customer is getting a service contract that is not being met or new installations that are not being finished. Brothers, as Elevator Constructors, we do not bid these jobs, nor do we assign the manpower, but we do perform the work. The work should be done with the highest degree of craftsmanship and pride. In 2007, when our Labor Committee sets down and negotiates our new contract, we shall demand the best because we are the best. Guest Commentary: by Ken Lee Who would have believed 25 years ago that the big three automakers would have plant closings and massive layoffs today. When economics are studied, there is one fact…the USA economy runs on wheels. Today many people are puzzled when friends, relatives, and families don’t have jobs after 20 years of constant employment. Why? The answer may be in your own driveway. It is a fact we are in a global market these days... but is it fair? It is very difficult for the Japanese public to buy an American made car due to many taxes and government restrictions. Why didn’t we have sanctions in the late seventies when cars were dumped on our shores? Would patriotism be defined as buying only USA goods? It is a fact economically that the foreign car is not cheaper. Comparing apples to apples the cost is higher, insurance is higher, and parts definitely higher, service is higher and resale is lower, unless it is traded back to the same manufacturer. Even though some foreign cars are assembled in the USA, guess where the engineering, sub-assemblies, and profits go. Most of those assembly plants are non-union and have little or no benefits. How many times have we witnessed or heard of serious fights over sports teams? How many times have you witnessed or heard of fights between Tahoe owners or Explorer owners? That’s called ownership pride. That pride was definitely here in the fifties and sixties…what happened? Can sports be more important than our livelihood and the strength of our country? Where do you stand? Commentary: I want to urge you to go to the Web Page that Carl Bonsignore has put together for our Local: WWW.IUEC12.Com. Much has recently been added including a classified ad section with items for sale from other members. My favorite section is “Nepotism in our Local”, good family values stuff. Well, next to the Journal Articles that is. That’s right, present & past Journal Articles our available for re-reading. You can download a copy for your self of any of the many photos available on the Web Site. I put the web page on “My Favorites” and click on it weekly just to review “IUEC Local 12 News Page” & “Words from B.A.”. Maintaining and editing the web page is a very time consuming job and we of Local 12 thank you Carl. Opposing views are good…Email me!
