BA’s Desk:

With spring approaching and the exiting of winter, I hope the change in climate will help to energize our membership.  Brothers we need a change in climate to take place in our industry and government.  As union brothers and skilled craftsmen we must unite and protect the craft that has given so much to all of us.  As union members we must be active in our locals to provide ideas, knowledge and strength.  As craftsmen we must perform at a higher level than our untrained, under paid counterparts.  As citizens we must be active in our Local and Federal Government to protect the rights of working men and women.  Brothers, being a union member is not just collecting the wages and fringes that have been bargained for us, but rather a person who sets the standards of our craft and takes the responsibility to protect the rights of all workers in this country.

I encourage you to take an active role in your local and elect government officials who will protect the rights of working men and women.

My personal condolences go out to Brother Don Bassett’s family. Don & I knew each other but I never had the privilege of working with him. Don put up a damn good fight with cancer but it finally took its toll January 12th, 2006.

Commentary:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
